Technological Advances in Care of Patients with Kidney Diseases

Abstract

This chapter explores updated guidelines and modern approaches in providing renal nutrition therapy. Summarized are the main nutrition elements of the KDOQI 2020 guidelines with prevention of disease related malnutrition at the forefront of the discussion. This chapter discusses at length the importance of providing and educating patients on finding pertinent, accurate, and reliable nutrition information specific to the patient’s nutrition status while avoiding marketing misconceptions. Also, the chapter reviews important factors from understanding laboratory work to mental health to counseling techniques when planning kidney friendly meals and guiding patients in reaching their personalized nutrition related health goals. Finally, this chapter looks into the use of app-based technology to provide renal nutrition information—and what needs to improve. Medical nutrition therapy has a critical role in the effectiveness of medical interventions in the ESRD patient—highlighting the importance of a collaborative and cooperative multidisciplinary team including the dietitian and patient working together.
