Abstract

This chapter will cover the major serum electrolytes: sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride, magnesium and phosphorus. It will examine their normal function, what to expect when they become abnormal and how to treat these conditions. A discussion of acid base status utilizing both the Strong Anion Difference and the traditional anion gap method will follow including an indepth discussion of metabolic, respiratory and mixed acidosis and alkalosis. The chapter will conclude with a case study.
