Abstract
This introductory chapter provides an overall picture of the gender dimensions of Covid-19 in India vis-à-vis the global context. Though the crisis is impacting women and men in different ways, it affects women more severely because of the pre-existing inequalities in social, economic and political spheres. Data from international sources are used to illuminate the gendered impacts of the pandemic on the health sector, job market and education sector. It also examines the increase in unpaid care and domestic work and the escalating gender-based violence during the pandemic. The chapter highlights the need for gender-responsive policies firmly grounded on the principles of gender mainstreaming and effectively implemented with women’s strong positioning and authority at regional, national and global levels to create a more equal and resilient world.
