Broadly Engaged Team Science in Clinical and Translational Research

Abstract

Broadly engaged team science has the potential to change how health care research is conducted. It encourages a more inclusive approach, with an expanded base of knowledge and expertise consulted. However, successfully engaging a broader study team to conduct research requires thoughtful guidance and supportive infrastructure. This chapter briefly outlines the development and evolution of public involvement in health research in England and compares and contrasts this with the progression of public involvement in the US. England has been at the forefront of the movement towards more inclusive health research teams, and in the last decade the US has increasingly invested in infrastructure to encourage and support public involvement. We consider the lessons from England and the US and discuss how broadly engaged team science could complement and build on the efforts to support public involvement in health research.
