Laparoscopic Colon Surgery

Abstract

Colon cancer can be adequately treated laparoscopically as long as the oncologic principles are not violated. Comparing with the open surgical procedures, there are no differences from an anatomical point of view, giving similar oncologic results. Laparoscopic procedures offer better visualization with minor surgical trauma, especially in difficult anatomical sites, faster pulmonary function recovery, fewer incidences of surgical-site complications, less in-hospital stay, less postoperative pain, earlier return to regular activity, and sooner rehabilitation. The types of laparoscopic colectomy depend mainly on the site of the tumor, taking into consideration the main vascular supply in order to achieve the best oncological result. This chapter describes and illustrates the anatomy of the colon and the rectum and subsequently explains the types of surgical procedures according to the different anatomical positions, surgical needs, and underlying conditions. The authors are diligently explaining the criteria of choice and the existing indications for malignant and benign conditions.
