Abstract

Patient education has been a cornerstone of medicine for centuries and is implicit in our recognition of patients having agency to make medical decisions. Understanding how people learn new information is therefore of paramount importance as we interact with patients in the hospital, the clinic, and the community. Behaviorist principles largely focus on the way that people respond to various stimuli. Cognitive psychology helps us understand how patients interact with new information. These principles remind us of the dramatic limitations of working memories and that encoding information into long-term memory requires meaningful associations with prior experiences. Since prior experiences are typically very different between patients and healthcare professionals, new information may be interpreted drastically differently by these two groups. Finally, learning is not limited to the clinic. Patients are part of large networks with not only clinicians—but also family, friends, and online social networks. Awareness of these different sources of information is critically important in our efforts to educate and form partnerships with our patients.
