1 Signs and Symptoms
Primarily affects elderly faired-skin females and patients of Asian ethnicity, and younger individuals with a predisposing condition (genetic factor [Muir-Torre syndrome] or carcinogenic factor [radiation]). Clinical signs can masquerade as other pathologies. Sebaceous cell carcinoma is a highly aggressive rare malignancy with high mortality rates. Recurrence is reported in up to 33% of cases, while distant metastasis can occur in up to 25%. Chalazia recurrence at the same location should raise the suspicion of sebaceous cell carcinoma, hence biopsy is mandatory. Sentinel lymph node biopsies are advised for tumors larger than 10 mm. Tumors larger than 20 mm are correlated with poor prognosis. Mortality rate varies from 9% to high as 40% with a 5-year survival rate of 33–50%. Larger lesions may metastasize usually to regional lymph node and are associated with high mortality rates (AJCC 8th edition) [2].
