Cyber-Physical Systems in the Built Environment

Abstract

This chapter summarizes the state of the art on transportation CPS, and presents an overview of research related to traffic management with connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV). The chapter discusses the principles, applications, deployment, and challenges for CAV CPS from a highway transportation systems management perspective. It presents traffic management strategies for CAVs including signal control optimization, freeway merge and weaving algorithms, and roundabout operations. The last sections discuss CPS challenges for transportation applications, and conclusions and recommendations for future research.
