Tips and Tricks for Problem Fractures, Volume I

Abstract

The operative and non-operative treatment of phalangeal fractures can be challenging. While fracture non-union is uncommon, adhesions and stiffness are common complications. There are three key principles to treating hand fractures: reduction within acceptable parameters, stable maintenance of reduction, and early mobilization. While brief immobilization post-operatively is common practice, more than 3 weeks of immobilization leads to stiffness. We present several illustrative cases to demonstrate common strategies and pitfalls to avoid when treating these fractures.
