Abstract
The spleen is the largest accumulation of lymphoid tissue in the human body. A wide variety of disorders may be encountered in the pediatric spleen, including congenital, neoplastic, infectious, and traumatic abnormalities. In addition, the spleen may be the primary site of pathology or manifest abnormalities as part of a systemic disorder. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging can yield important diagnostic information about an array of pediatric splenic disorders and help direct clinical decision making. This chapter reviews up-to-date MR imaging techniques; splenic anatomy including embryology, normal development, and anatomic variants; and selected disorders affecting the spleen in the pediatric population.
