Thyroid Cancer

Abstract

These rare neoplasms are solid masses, often less than 3 cm in diameter, and are well circumscribed (usually encapsulated). The cut surfaces are light colored, and vessels and small foci of fibrosis may be visible. Microscopically, the tumors consist of trabeculae and lobules of elongated, oval, or polygonal cells, usually medium sized and with poorly defined borders. The groups of cells are surrounded by capillaries and variable amounts of eosinophilic, hyalinized material, which consists of clumps of type IV collagen and laminin. The numerous cytoplasmic microfilaments (presumably keratin) present in many of the epithelial cells also contribute to the eosinophilic zones.
