Abstract
Nurses, nurse educators, and advanced practice nurses (APNs) are in an excellent position to provide leadership in the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit (PCICU). Nursing leadership roles include quality improvement, consultation, education, development and implementation of evidence-based practices, and research. This is especially true as more and more APNs are pursuing doctoral education. Many centers have nursing shared leadership with unit-based councils. Also included in this section is a summary of recommendations for orientation and education for the bedside nurse working in the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit. These recommendations provide a structured professional development program for newly hired nurses that maximize critical thinking abilities and acquiring complex skills. Ongoing education after onboarding is essential to the success of bedside nursing professional development. APNs and nurse leaders are essential to the development of a strong nursing team.
