Protection pillar is the part of the ore body which remains unmined or temporarily unmined to protect important surface facilities, landforms, main shafts, and roadways from damages caused by underground mining, or to separate aquifers, fracture zones, ore sections, or ore blocks. According to its functions and properties, protection pillar is divided into shaft pillar, barrier pillar, crown pillar, bracket pillar, etc.

Shaft Pillar

A temporarily or permanently unmined ore body left around the shaft to protect the shaft from the impact of rock movement around the goaf, deforming, or being destroyed. The deformation or destruction of the shaft is related to the properties of rock strata, ore body occurrence, geological structure, hydrogeological conditions, mining methods, shaft structure and equipment, and its deformation resistance. The size of the shaft pillar shall be determined by rock mechanics and numerical simulation analysis, namely, the width of protection zone is determined...
