Definition

Spot welding, a widely used resistance welding process, was originally developed by Elihu Thompson in the early 1900s [1]. The most common application of spot welding is in the automobile industry, where it is widely used and most often performed automatically by preprogrammed industrial robots on assembly lines. With the continuing development of bottom-up nanotechnology fabrication processes, the nanoscale version of robotic spot welding, or nanorobotic spot welding [2], may likewise play an important role in interconnecting carbon nanotubes (CNTs), nanowires, nanobelts, nanohelixes, and other nanomaterials and structures for the assembly of nanocircuits and nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS).
