Synonyms

Degenerative joint diseases (DJD) are also referred to as osteoarthritis/osteoarthrosis (OA) and degenerative arthritis. In day‐to‐day language, the terms osteoarthrosis and osteoarthritis are used interchangeably; however, osteoarthrosis may be the more appropriate term since inflammatory changes often are not pronounced in most of the joints. The best general phrase to describe degenerative changes in any type of articulation is ‘DJD’.

Definition

OA is a non‐inflammatory joint disease characterized by degeneration of the articular cartilage, hypertrophy of bone at joint margins and changes in the synovial membrane. It is best described as a disease of organ failure in which injury to one joint component leads to damage of other components and finally to joint failure (‘whole organ disease’).

Traditionally, osteoarthrosis was classified as either primary, when there is no obvious predisposing cause or underlying abnormality, or secondary, when the disease results from...
