Definition

Many factors may produce diffuse predominantly interstitial infiltration of the lung. These entities comprise: hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP), smoking‐related interstitial lung disease, collagen vascular diseases, pulmonary vasculitis, drug toxicity, and radiation induced lung fibrosis.

Pathology/Histopathology

Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis is an immunologically induced inflammatory disease of the lung parenchyma and terminal airways as a consequence of repeated inhalation of a variety of organic dusts and other agents in a sensitized host. The classic histopathology of HP features the triad of cellular bronchiolitis, a lymphoplasmocytic interstitial infiltrate, and poorly formed nonnecrotizing granulomas.
