Definition

Financial management for local government is the system by which financial resources are planned, directed, and controlled to enable the efficient and effective delivery of public services at the local level.

Introduction

Local governments around the world are responsible for a wide range of public services. They include but not limited to planning, education, transportation, social services, police, fire, waste disposal, recreational facilities, and economic development. Today local agencies are increasingly faced with the need to efficiently plan and deliver these services with scarce resources. The service planning and delivery cannot exist without the financial management system that provides resources and measures performance.
