Definition
Nevus Sebaceus (NS) is a congenital hamartomatous lesion of the skin of embryonal ectodermal origin. It is thought to derive from postzygotic somatic mutations involving pluripotential cells of the primary epithelial germ. The primary epithelial germ normally gives rise to the folliculo-sebaceous unit and to the apocrine glands. NS is characterized by abnormalities of the epidermis, the hair follicle, and the sebaceous and apocrine glands. The aspect of these changes varies according to the age of the patient (Alessi and Sala 1986; Morioka 1985). Nevus sebaceus is associated with benign and rarer malignant tumors that develop in the lesions, mostly during adulthood, in 5–15 % of the patients (Cribier et al. 2000).
