The disintegration of the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s of the twentieth century progressed in the wake of the fall of Communism in Europe. The end of the one party regime brought to the surface the dormant nationalism that was the driving force of the wars between the ethnic groups, each fighting for more territory for their successor states of the former federation.
