Abstract
Some liquid crystalline side chain polymers are described with respect to some of their properties in the electric field. Compounds investigated were polyacryl and polysiloxanes with mesogenic p-substituted phenylbenzoates. The compounds show a static dielectric anisotropy Δɛ\s>0. This allows the two-frequency technique to be applied. Some response times are in the 100 ms range at temperatures not too much below the clearing point.
The relaxation frequencies of ɛ ‖ are ∼ 103 smaller compared to the low molecular liquid crystal data. This depends on the remarkable higher viscosity of the polymers.
