Abstract

A review of phases and structures in thermotropic liquid crystals is given. Studies on the miscibility of phases have shown a system of l. c. phases with a characteristic phase sequence on the temperature scale. The phase types are coded by letter symbols. A system of structures corresponds to the system of phase types. The changes of order in phase transitions are reflected in the transition heats. Special features in the phase behaviour and the structures of more polar substances are described (reentrant phase and A-phase polymorphism).
