Abstract
This research examines Chinese English majors' motivation in oral English learning and the influence of WeChat and DingTalk in the light of Self-Determination Theory (SDT). A mobile-assisted service-learning project initiated by NingboTech University is reported. Two types of motivation including controlled motivation (external regulation and introjected regulation) and autonomous motivation (identified regulation and integrated regulation) are measured during three stages of the project. The results suggest that external regulation does not provide lasting motivation, while identified regulation and integrated regulation both play vital roles in students’ oral English learning. Well-designed projects with more responsibility can activate and sustain students' autonomous motivation. The utilization of mobile technology also plays a significant role throughout the project.
