Abstract
There is strong evidence that people are more likely to phub their partners than they would phub anyone else they encounter face to face, including their closest friends, other friends, siblings, children, parents, acquaintances, and even strangers in the street. But partner phubbing is associated with grave consequences, and not only for the relationship with partners but also for the well-being of partners. Ignoring partners in face-to-face interactions in favour of the smartphone can lower partners’ feelings of intimacy and attachment towards their partners and can decrease relationship satisfaction with partners and increase partners’ social anxiety levels. Partner phubbing can make partners become depressed. Partner phubbing can trigger feelings of exclusion, decrease marital quality, ignite feelings of jealousy, and increase smartphone conflicts. Overall, partner phubbing can negatively affect partners’ well-being. This chapter examines in depth these damaging effects on partners and explains the psychological mechanism underlying partner phubbing.
