Abstract

This investigation dealt with the load- settlement behaviour of soil treated with stone columns and the effect of multiple spacings. Locally available soil was characterised in the laboratory and graded as intermediate compressible soil was chosen for stabilising with stone columns, as the settlement characteristic cs made the soil weak for construction. A laboratory study was conducted in understanding the behaviour of stone column with varied spacing. The parameters varied were the stone column diameters (2.54 and 3.18 cm) and spacings (5, 7 and 9 cm) between two stone columns. The soil was prepared in CBR mould depicting unit cell concept. The water content of the sample was taken close to the liquid limit. It was observed, with an increase in the diameter of the stone column the load-carrying capacity increases.
