Abstract

As a case study, the CPTU and laboratory tests results Binh Dai offshore wind power projects in Vietnam are analyzed to acquire the accurate strength parameters and interpretative parameters of CPTU. The undrained shear strength su derived from UU test and unconfined compression test (Qu) are overly conservative, while su from direct quick shear tests (DSq) and consolidated undrained shear tests (CU) are more representative in Binh Dai site. The normalised undrained shear strength (su/σv0′)NC for the organic clay and stiff clay in are approximately 0.13 and 0.28 obtained from DSq test, respectively. The results from CU test of both organic clay and stiff clay are identical with a value of 0.36, which is relatively higher than the DSq test. By combining SHANSEP and CPTU data, the undrained shear strength of clayey soil can be obtained using the conservative su/σv0’ value from DSq test, which show a good agreement with the laboratory test results of organic clay at the top, and reappear the in-situ undrained shear strength of the stiff clay from 20 m to 50 m. Finally, the Nkt method is introduced to calibrate the SHANSEP and OCR-to-CPTU interpretation, Nkt of 21 is recommended for Binh Dai offshore area.
