Abstract

In this article, an attempt is made to identify the optimized parameter combination in cold metal transfer (CMT) welding of aluminium 5083 using technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) optimization technique. Welding was carried out based on L9 Taguchi array with current (A), welding speed (B), and frequency (C) as input parameters. The quality of weld was assessed by measuring the depth of penetration, bead width, reinforcement and heat affected zone (HAZ) width. From the TOPSIS optimization method, it was identified that A1B2C3 as the optimized parameter combination. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to identify most influential factor on the overall objective function and it was found that welding speed controlled the weld geometry to the maximum extent.
