Abstract
This chapter considers three fields closely associated with modernism: mountaineering, architecture and photography. It breaks down the distinction between exploration in natural wildernesses and in urban areas, and considers the shift from Picturesque values in photography to the valorisation of kinetic, embodied photographic practices. It also traces the influence of emerging technology on these practices and identifies a strong performative thread which provides continuity through the various shifts in technique and philosophy.
