Tacticity in Polymers Initiated by Metathesis Polymerization: Effect of Catalyst

Abstract

Tacticity is defined in relation to ring opening metathesis polymerization and some predictions about tacticity are made on the basis of a mechamsm in which the propagating metal-carbene complex has a chiral metal centre. Results are presented for the polymers of some symmetricaliy substituted norbornenes, some unsymmetricaliy substituted norbornenes, some symmetrically substituted norbornadienes and a symmetricaliy substituted 7-oxanorbomene. In general the predictions are borne out provided that in most cases one allows for the possibility of partial or complete epimerization of the metal centre, or relaxation to an achiral centre, between propagation steps. A complete range of tacticity can be observed: all-cis syndiotactie, all-trans isotactic, and atactic, depending on the monomer/catalyst system. Two exceptional cases are discussed in terms of a modified metal-carbene mechanism.
