Abstract

The use of type Ia Supernovae (SNe) as distance indicators lead two groups to the surprising conclusion that the expansion of the Universe is accelerated [1, 2]. This result relies on the assumption that the properties of SN Ia in distant galaxies are the same as in the local Universe, in particular that the SN Ia absolute magnitude does not change with cosmic age. Although there are empirical evidences to support this assumption, it must be stressed that the path leading to SN Ia explosion is poorly known and in particular the progenitor systems have not yet been identified. This of course leaves room for unknown evolutionary effects.
