Abstract

Blow-out fractures are of special interest to ophthalmologists, as they often cause diplopia. Reviewing the history, it is interesting to note that the first reports of blow-out fractures were reported by ophthalmologists. Already in 1892, before radiography had been introduced, the Austrian Theodor Beer reported 15 cases of traumatic enophthalmos, including two personal observations. Lederer, also an ophthalmologist, published another report in 1902, including 49 cases — 3 observations of his own — and postulated a cleft-like fracture of the orbital floor as the underlying cause.
