Abstract

A basis is laid for interpreting the electronic structure of atoms, the atomic structure of molecules and clusters, and perhaps eventually the nucleonic structure of nuclei on something of a common basis. The case is presented for the existence of molecule-like quantization and collective motion in some states of doubly-excited helium and helium like ions. The relation between collective and independent-particle motion is illustrated with a model based on two interacting particles on a sphere or on concentric spheres. The possibility of finding independent-particle-like behavior in simple molecules is presented and computations based on a suggestive model give persuasive indications that states characterized by such quantization might be observable in the high overtone spectra of simple triatomic molecules.
