Abstract

Cohen (1) produced an hypothesis which causally linked chiasma frequency and sperm redundancy as an explanation of gamete redundancy. An extension of this hypothesis is that the female genital tract normally only permits (selects) a small population of spermatozoa from within an ejaculate to fertilize. Cohen has been widely misinterpreted and thought to believe that most spermatozoa are incompetent gametes, unable to fertilize. However, if it was the case that most spermatozoa were non-functional, then clearly there would be no necessity for the female tract to select!
