Summary

The motility of ram cauda epididymal spermatozoa exposed to 1 mM- RS α-chlorohydrin and their ATP concentration declined dramatically after 15 min incubation with 5 mM-D glucose or 5 mM-D glucose + 10 mM- L lactate + 1 mM-pyruvate. By contrast the effects of α-chlorohydrin were relatively slight in the absence of glucose. The concerted action of α-chlorohydrin and glucose may dissipate energy in a ‘futile cycling’ reaction and this could explain the effective contraceptive action of the drug.
