Interaction of Zona-Free Hamster Eggs with Fresh and Frozen Ram Spermatozoa in vitro

  • Chapter
The Sperm Cell

Summary

Zona-free hamster eggs were penetrated in vitro by fresh and frozen ram spermatozoa. Washing and in vitro preincubation were indispensable for induction of the ability of the spermatozoa to interact with the eggs. Eighteen frozen sperm samples from four fertile rams were tested for their ability to interact with zona-free hamster eggs. Major differences in penetration ability were observed not only between the ejaculates of the same animal (from 1.1 to 81.0%), but also between the sperm of individual rams (from 25.0 to 63.3%). These results are complemented with rather limited data of the fertilizing capacity of frozen sperm from the same animals in vivo.
