Abstract
In the great majority of mammals fertilization takes place in the ampulla of the oviduct. Fertilization is promoted by many biological mechanisms within the female tract which facilitate the transport of male and female gametes and their union. While a great deal of scientific information is now available on the biology of sperm transport in the female [reviewed by Overstreet (1)] and on fertilization in vivo [reviewed by Yanagimachi (2)], many of the experiments which examine the fertilizing power of sperm must necessarily be carried out in vitro.
