Abstract
For the study of the dynamics of rich clusters of galaxies it is important to know rather precise radial velocities of fairly large numbers of cluster galaxies. Kent and Gunn (1982) have analysed the surface density and velocity dispersion profiles of the Coma cluster, where more than 200 radial velocities are known, in terms of a series of models with various assumptions about the form of the distribution function. Obtaining large numbers of redshifts to an accuracy of order 50–100 km/s takes a lot of time on a large telescope, but here we show how redshifts of substantial numbers of cluster galaxies might be obtained simultaneously, making it possible to obtain 100 or more precise redshifts in a cluster per night.
