Abstract

We have made models of the spectral and spatial distribution of radiation from circumstellar grains in IRC +10 216, incorporating new opacity laws for graphite and amorphous carbon; graphite still seems less suitable than amorphous carbon. The predicted size of the scattered-light halo is consistent with visibility observations and direct imaging, although the visibility and degree of polarization in the model could be improved by reducing the direct starlight with a small edge-on circumstellar disk.
