Abstract
Our present knowledge of winds and chromospheres of G, K and M giants is reviewed which in recent years has grown fast, mainly due to the advent of X-ray and UV satellites. In particular, it is demonstrated that in Zeta Aur type eclipsing binaries, where a B star moves within the wind of a K or G supergiant, the B star can be used as a light source which probes the wind and extended chromosphere of the cool super-giant with spatial resolution. It is shown that; with more accurate wind velocities and mass-loss rates having become available, systematic trends of wind properties with stellar parameters become apparent.
