Requirements for Theoretical Models of Outflows

Mass Outflows from Stars and Galactic Nuclei

Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 142))

Abstract

The organizers of the Workshop have requested that I summarize the very thorough coverage of mass loss from diverse astrophysical souces presented over the past five days. Clearly this id an impossible task and I cannot pretend to do it justice. During the 31 years since Deutch (1956) first presented indisputable evidence for mass loss from the α Her system, the topic of mass loss has grown to be a major research area in astrophysics. The review papers presented at this Workshop summarize the current status of this field.

“A hypothesis or theory is clear, decisive and positive but is believed by no one but the man who created it. Experimental findings on the other hand, are messy, inexact things which are believed by everyone except the man who did the work”
