Abstract
As a general introduction to the Workshop, we discuss the motivation for joining the perspectives of solar, stellar and extragalactic astronomers, both theorists and experimentalists, on the problem of mass outflows from astrophysical objects. We illustrate some of the principal physical similarities and differences between outflows in various astrophysical systems, and show how experiences derived from different subject areas can help to build a complete picture of the wind phenomenon.
