Abstract
The failure mechanism of FRP-composites under longitudinal compressive stress is studied. Considering the effect of the initial curvature of the fibre and the yielding in shear of matrix, etc., a new formula to predict the FRP longitudinal compressive strength has been derived.
Some ways to improve the compressive testing, including specimen form, loading fixture and transverse supporting fixture, are presented. By numerous tests, compressive properties of various FRP-composites are obtained. Finally, the theoretical prediction of the compressive failure mode is identified with the experimental results and the longitudinal compressive strength can be greatly increased through using a high-modulus fibre, a matrix with high shear strength and improving the interface bonding strength, etc.
