Voeding bij kinderen met oncologische aandoeningen

Samenvatting

Bij kinderen met kanker is een goede voedingstoestand van essentieel belang omdat een kind geestelijk en lichamelijk volop in ontwikkeling is. Bij kinderen zijn de meest voorkomende vormen van kanker: leukemie, lymfeklierkanker en hersentumoren. Meer zeldzaam zijn de solide tumoren uitgaande van een orgaan in het lichaam. De behandeling gaat bij veel patiënten gepaard met gewichtsverlies en soms met (ernstige) ondervoeding. Ondervoeding heeft een nadelige invloed op weefselherstel na chemotherapie, radiotherapie en/of chirurgie. Het is van het grootste belang een optimale voedingstoestand te onderhouden door voldoende energie, eiwit en overige voedingsstoffen toe te dienen, zo mogelijk per os. Soms kan (nachtelijke) sondevoeding of totale parenterale voeding aangewezen zijn. Bij de start van de behandeling moet de energie- en eiwitbehoefte van het kind bepaald worden en tijdens de behandeling dient dit nauwkeurig gevolgd worden.
