Inleiding

In de afgelopen decennia is de mondgezondheid sterk verbeterd door goede voorlichting. Omdat de gebitsbewustheid van de Nederlandse bevolking groeit, is behoud van het eigen gebit normaal geworden. In de dagelijkse praktijk is duidelijk te merken dat de acceptatie van biologische imperfecties daalt. Door al deze invloeden is de vraag naar orthodontie in twintig jaar sterk gestegen. Orthodontische inzichten en behandelingstechnieken houden gelijke tred. Er is dus heel veel mogelijk, behandelingen zijn kostentechnisch zeer bereikbaar en de wens van de patiënt – in de rij staande gebitselementen – is sterk. Als voordelen van een vroege (interceptieve) orthodontische behandeling worden in de literatuur (Kerosuo et al., 2013) en op professionele websites beschreven:
