Abstract
The unusual donor abilities of caged phosphites {Ia} and {III} have been the subject of recent investigations in these laboratories. The low steric requirements and high dipole moments of {Ia} and {II} are undoubtedly significant

factors in the formation of several transition metal ion complexes exhibiting maximum coordination numbers with {Ia} (1, 2) and in the formation of stable adducts of {Ia} and {II} with Lewis acids such as the BH3 and B3H7 groups (34). measure of the ligand field strength of {Ia} was obtained from the U V spectrum of the colorless [Co{Ia}6]3+ ion which indicated that Dq is 3320 cm-1; a value very close to that for Dq in the [Co(CN)6]3- ion which is 3350 cm-1 (2).
