Zusammenfassung
John Clare ist ein ebenso typischer wie untypischer englischer Romantiker, der in der Zeit der gleichzeitig stattfindenden landwirtschaftlichen und industriellen Revolution über die Auswirkungen von beiden in lyrischer Form Zeugnis ablegt. Gleichwohl unterscheiden sich seine Gedichte von denen der kanonischeren romantischen Lyrikerinnen und Lyriker nicht allein dadurch, dass Clare als Sohn von einfachen Landarbeitern eine besondere Nähe zur ausgebeuteten Umwelt eignet. Vielmehr zeichnen sich seine Texte durch die in Teilen (klassen-)kämpferische Ausrichtung und in anderen Teilen fast posthumane Rücknahme der menschlichen Position aus. In der schwierigen Kombination aus radikalem Materialismus und ebenso radikalem Posthumanismus nehmen Clares Texte damit häufig das vorweg, was in der neueren Theoriebildung Material Ecocriticism genannt wird und eine Reaktion auf das Problem des Anthropozentrismus in vielen ökokritischen Positionen darstellt.
