Zusammenfassung
1969 veröffentlichte Quentin Skinner seinen Aufsatz Meaning and Understanding in the History of Ideas in der Zeitschrift History & Theory. Der destruktive Furor, mit dem der damals achtundzwanzigjährige Skinner in diesem Text die herrschenden Praktiken der politischen Ideengeschichte demontierte, kann noch heute überraschen. Skinner konfrontiert seinen Leser zunächst mit einer Reihe von ‚Mythologien‘, die er sodann einer konsequenten Entmythologisierung unterzieht: ‚mythology of doctrines‘; ‚mythology of coherence‘; ‚mythology of prolepsis‘ und ‚mythology of parochialism‘.
My suggestion is thus that intellectual historians can hope to produce something of far more than antiquarian interest if they simply ply their trade. It is enough for them to uncover the often neglected riches of our intellectual heritage and display them once more to view.
