Abstract
The number sets \({\mathbb {N}}\), \({\mathbb {Z}}\), \({\mathbb {Q}}\) and \({\mathbb {R}}\) of the natural, integer, rational, and real numbers are familiar from school days. In this chapter we briefly consider a few aspects concerning the natural, whole and rational numbers, as far as we need them in engineering mathematics. The largest space here is taken up by complete induction, which usually causes problems for beginners. Often it helps to just stubbornly do the recipe, understanding comes with time.
The real numbers take more space, we take care of them in the next chapter.
