Zusammenfassung

Heinroth war 1818 wahrscheinlich der erste, der das Wort psychosomatisch anwendete. 1822 führte Jacobi den umgekehrten, aber nicht so glücklichen Ausdruck somatopsychisch ein. Jedenfalls wurde das Wort „psychosomatisch“; erst nach 1928 endgültig in den Sprachgebrauch aufgenommen. Vor diesem Zeitpunkt findet es sich kaum in Bibliographien und wird auch erst seit 1900 in einigen Wörterbüchern erwähnt (E. L. Margetts). — Die zunehmende Anwendung dieses Wortes in den letzten 20 Jahren beruht auf der wachsenden Anteilnahme an den psychischen Aspekten der Krankheiten. Eine vollständige Darstellung des Problems würde uns bis in das Altertum führen1. Arzt und Laie wußten schon immer, daß die Krankheit oft psychischen Geschehnissen unterlag. Wenn von der moralischen Ätiologie der Krankheit gesprochen wurde, wie man es zeitweise getan hat, und wie es auch Heinroth in seiner These „Moralische Ursache der Psychosen“ verteidigt, so war dies ein mehr oder weniger ungenügender Versuch einer psychosomatischen Medizin.
