Abstract

The nucleus is the main centre for storage of genetic information and for regulation of gene expression. Virtually all of the cellular DNA is now known to be nuclear. Chloroplasts and mitochondria contain their own DNA, but the informational content and amount of DNA in these organelles is very small relative to the nuclear genome. Control of transcription of nuclear DNA is of fundamental importance in the growth and development of cells and is discussed in Chapter 2. Precursor rRNA, rRNA and tRNA, are major species of nuclear RNA. However these are considered in detail elsewhere in this book and are not discussed in the present chapter which is devoted to other RNA species that occur in the nucleus.
