Zusammenfassung
In The Age of Surveillance Capitalism legt Shoshana Zuboff eine ambitionierte Analyse des gegenwärtigen Kapitalismus vor, den sie als Überwachungskapitalismus charakterisiert. Seine Vertreter sind einige der wertvollsten Unternehmen (und vor allem: Marken) des beginnenden 21. Jahrhunderts, darunter Apple, Google/Alphabet und Facebook/Meta. Die Macht dieser Unternehmen beruht laut Zuboff darauf, dass sie die Nachschubwege für „Verhaltensüberschuss“, den Rohstoff des Überwachungskapitalismus, kontrollieren. Im Überwachungskapitalismus wird dieser Verhaltensüberschuss in die künstliche Intelligenz eingespeist, um Vorhersagen über das Verhalten von Konsument*innen zu produzieren. Werbetreibende gehörten zu den frühen Kund*innen der Überwachungsunternehmen. Ihre Vorhersageprodukte sind für Werbetreibende attraktiv, weil sie ihnen anzeigen, wo und wann sie ihre Anzeigen platzieren sollten, damit diese effektiv sind. Auch wenn der Überwachungskapitalismus inzwischen gleich in mehrfacher Weise über die Werbeindustrie hinausgewachsen ist, wirkte diese Industrie mit dieser frühen Nachfrage und ihren an die Überwachungskapitalist*innen überwiesenen Werbegeldern als Katalysator für den Ausbau der Überwachungsinfrastruktur und den Wandel des Überwachungskapitalismus von Verhaltensvorhersage zur Verhaltensintervention und -modifikation
